Testimony

Hey all!
I know its been quite some time since my last blog post and I apologize for that. To be honest I was getting discouraged because getting my daughter to cooperate and do her myo-brace exercises and wear her myo-brace appliance at all was a struggle. She fought me tooth and nail about wearing her appliance. It was uncomfortable for her. She couldn't sit still and stay quiet long enough; the appliance was always in and out of her mouth. She also didn't like to do her breathing exercises. (according to her those 2 minutes a day were better spent playing with friends)
Some of you may know me and my family, most of you reading this however do not. My daughter has been struggling in school for the past 2 years. She was diagnosed in 2nd grade with ADHD/ADD combined. I chose not to go the medicine route since I personally feel as though doctors sometimes push things like a bandaid. I do not judge those who are on medication. This post is about me and my decisions as my child's mother and her number 1 advocate.

Last May (2018) Danyelle got a CBCT scan done. (A full 3D X-ray of her skull/airway/teeth/nasal cavity...) The radiologist report states that her airway (Oxygen to the brain) was at 1.8mm wide. The bare minimum should have been 100mm with around 300mm being ideal. Alongside that devastating news, I learned her tonsils and adenoids were severely enlarged also contributing to the small airway.

This would explain all the struggles I have with her: her sleepiness, dark circle under eyes, ADD/ADHD, etc.
My first testimony (if I'm honest-probably my favorite💕) is the fact that my daughter is ALIVE! She had almost no airflow to her brain. God is Awesome!

2 weeks ago May 2019 (1 year after her first scan and 8 months after starting her myobrace therapy and osteopathic treatment) Danyelle had her second CBCT scan. Her report was sent out to the radiologist once again.
My second testimony is this time the report came back with astounding news that literally caught me off guard. Her airway is now at 134.4mm (within the normal range - still at the low end) Her tonsil and adenoids are only moderately enlarged (they did shrink).

Along side of that, I also had her retested for ADD/ADHD (Vanderbilt scale) and her patterns and behaviors significantly decreased in those that align with ADD/ADHD from 2 years ago.  She still has symptoms but she is not within range of being classified as having ADD/ADHD any longer.

We have quite the journey left to go, however I am still amazed at just what 8 months of myobrace therapy and osteopathic treatment can do. And thats with having a child who doesn't want to cooperate and do the therapy as she is supposed to. What a difference this treatment is. This is not just a bandaid to cover symptoms. It's learning how to breath properly through your nose.

Starting out I was very skeptical on the therapy mostly because I didn't understand fully how it worked or even the benefit for her overall health was. Danyelle struggled to understand it as well. After this past year I can see positive changes in her. she told me (as well as my noticing) that she doesn't struggle as much with waking up for school in the mornings. It's easier for her to concentrate. Her dark circles under her eyes are almost gone. She has a calmer energy, she still talks loud and a lot, but she has the attention span to keep in her myobrace without speaking when it's in. Given the significant difference in work load from 3rd grade to 4th grade, she still struggles in her academics. She recently got a tutor and the tutor doesn't see the same struggles as I see. She is a very bright girl. She would still much rather be with her friends. She is grasping concepts more.

Next step is for Danyelle to receive her ALF appliance to help adjust her high palate and realign her jaw.

I will forever be grateful for Dr. Linda Dean-Duru and her team as well as Dr. Traci Jones who are working together to help my daughter and her overall health, not just her teeth. 👍
