Myobrace

Well, Today we started a new chapter. My 9 year old has qualified for a new therapy called myofunctional therapy. Prior to this (these first 9 years of her life) she has had these regular habits or what her dentist now would call symptoms from an improper jaw size. Meaning her mouth and jaw are too small and she has certain results because of it.
These certain symptoms/results are as follows: overcrowding of her teeth; snoring; frequent ear infections; can't sit still for nothing-ADHD; little focus and short attention span-ADD; and acid reflux. The signs of acid reflux were noticed in her teeth when we became patients of Dr. Lynda. No other dentists had ever brought this to our attention before. I am thankful that this was brought to my attention. After I was given this news, I made an appointment with her Primary Care Physician who gave us the referral to see a gastroenterologist, who did an endoscopic procedure. In doing so, found a bacterial infection called H-pylori, which present  some similar signs as acid reflux, like burping, heartburn and vomiting. If left untreated could (worse case scenario) cause cancer. I am sure there are a few more symptoms she has that I'm not listing, these are just the ones at the top of my brain right now.

Many months ago we had a routine cleaning visit where we were given a questionnaire by the dentist to fill out at home over the next couple days while I observed her behavior. Being me, I filled it out promptly (in 3 days or so) but then I failed to return it for a few months. Typical mom brain.
After I finally returned it to Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru with Ashburn Childrens Dentistry, she promptly set up an appointment for measurements of this myobrace.

Today was that appointment. As much as my daughter doesn't like going to the dentist, she did pretty well. She even said "this is fun" she was getting lots of pictures done. I'm sure she felt like a beauty queen.

She even did well with her molds. I can attest to the fact that wax mold is not my favorite thing. Ouch. Yuck. But she did good. She picked 2 flavors for her mold, mint and watermelon. She recommends mint.

Mostly a cooperative child this morning.  About a 45 minute process. And the first step complete.  I am calling today a success.

I am exited to see this process through, and looking forward to positive changes.
